Chico’s mom arrived at our door in the morning hours. Her eyebrow, cheek and lips were sutured, but all her attention was on the caramel colored furry face peeking out from under her arm. They were both victims of domestic violence – the weapon was a golf club. Chico’s mom threw herself on top of Chico, so that he would not suffer the same abuse she had. One week later, she had her stitches removed in the Shade Tree Shelter health clinic, sponsored by Touro University, so that she did not have to leave the shelter and answer more questions about her injuries.
